HatchForm has been working on strategic planning for over a decade and after seeing plan after plan fail to launch we developed a set of services aimed directly at challenging the status quo. KARA SMITH PLANNING SCHOLOARSHIP

Kara Q Smith was the co-founder of Craft Strategy Studio - a company focused on innovative planning for non-profit organizations. Many of HatchForm’s action planning services were first conceived while Sean and Kara were working to launch Craft. Kara was a kind, energetic, empathetic, and intelligent soul. Her work in economic development, the arts, community revitalization, and equity impacted countless lives throughout the US and the world. Kara passed away in 2024 and in her honor HatchForm created a planning scholarship for non-profits in need os strategic planning assistance. Every year HatchForm strives to work with at least one non-profit organization completely free of charge. The complimentary service includes one strategy sprint and inclusion in our implementation community of practice. If you lead a non-profit working in economic development, the arts, or community revitalization with a budget of $100,000 or less you are invited to submit an application for the scholarship.

In November 2025 Sean O’Shea from HatchForm presented to New Mexico IDEA (the state’s economic development trade and advocacy organization) on the importance of action planning. The presentation entitled You Have a Strategic Plan Now What?! looks at why plans fail, what and action oriented plan looks like, how to mine existing strategies to create an action plan, and tips for working with consultants to ensure that action and implementation are priorities from the beginning.
